The Founder, Mike Smith BSc, PGCE

Newthorpe IT was established by myself, Mike Smith, in 2013. The aim of the business was to provide local IT advice, support and training to my local community in which I’ve lived and worked.

I’ve worked in education/IT training & IT support in the East Midlands for nearly thirty years, from the days when the personal computer was first making its breakthrough into the mass market.

My experiences cover numerous primary schools, secondary schools (Eastwood & Kimberley), colleges (Broxtowe, South East Derbyshire & Derby) and universities (Derby & Loughborough) some in the capacity of IT teaching and others in the role of IT support/development/management.

I have helped and supported a huge range of customers both in age (8-90+) and abilities (complete beginners to university level), and while working for Broxtowe college I ran sessions for students with Learning difficulties.

This range of diverse workplaces and experiences means Newthorpe IT should be able to meet your needs however basic or complex they are - we are here to help our customers acquire the IT skills  they need for everyday life/work.

About Us

The geographical areas we cover

Working from our base in Newthorpe, our primary coverage is the NG16 area in Nottinghamshire, and Amber Valley & Erewash over the border in Derbyshire - but we are not confined to these areas though, so please do get in touch if you are further away!

What we don’t do..

We don’t sell computers. We are not a hardware/PC repair company so if you have a broken or faulty machine then you need to look elsewhere. Neither do we undertake hardware upgrades - but we do give advice about what you might need, or are considering doing it. Because we don’t supply or fit hardware you can be assured that we will give an honest opinion as to what you might need, and this could save you doing a costly upgrade you perhaps don’t need. It also means you can ask the right questions should you need to upgrade or buy new equipment

What we do..

Our services break down into two broad categories. These are giving advice & support for PC related queries or issues, and providing classes and training. We do this either one-to-one or in small groups.

Our Partnerships

Newthorpe IT works in partnership with various local groups & charities to promote the use of IT across all areas of the community, where currently there is no known provision. Our four target areas are:

We have worked with Age Concern Eastwood, and Age Concern Carlton, offering introductory IT sessions to complete beginners. We also worked with Eastwoods ‘Making A Difference’ community group and Town Centre Management (Broxtowe Borough Council) to provide free introductory IT sessions in Eastwood during  November 2014.
